Web Search

Use the form above to search for documents on the web containing specific words or combinations of words. The text search engine will display a weighted list of matching documents, with better matches shown first. Each list item is a link to a matching document; if the document has a title it will be shown, otherwise only the document's file name is displayed. A brief explanation of the query language is available, along with examples. Following that is a list of some popular search engines.

Search Engines

• Google is the best search engine on the web! It shows no advertisements in the search results, which is a major benefit. Plus you get the page that you are looking for at the very top of the list. This site indicies web pages in a way that cuts out the useless links and attempts at hijacking the results. Look on this search engine before you use any other one! My personal Favorite!
• Deja.com is an archive of messages posted in the various Usenet Newsgroups. If you missed a response or want to do a search on past postings, this is the best place to look.
• Snap.com is a fast search engine. Is another portal/search site. It seems fairly powerful and has a link to a page that allows customizable searches.
• Dogpile is a multi-search engine. It takes your search request and submits it to several of the engines listed on this page. The results are gathered into a single list by dogpile for easier access.
• Yahoo lists search information in a hierarchy. Starting with general topics and going deeper into more specific information, it is a good site to use when searching for broad subjects. If you do not know what you are looking for, start here. Yahoo provides links at the bottom of the response page to other search engines if it does not find what you need.
• InfoSeek is a nature language search engine. It allows you to enter your queries in the form of a question such as: Where can I find web pages about search engines?.
• Lycos provides a fast search for specific topics as well as an "A to Z" list for more general topics similar to Yahoo. It is the first engine to have picked one of my pages on it's own. Lycos is the only engine that I have found that allows you to link directly to their page.
• Hotbot searches for specific topics, and allows a very advanced search providing you know specific details.
• Alta-Vista is one of the fastest search engines. It is another specific topic search engine. It allows you to search both the Web and Usenet newsgroups.
• Excite is a specific subject search engine.
• Webcrawler is the weakest of the search engines in my opinion, but it is better than nothing.
